Description
Pythium sterilum is a pathogenic oomycete responsible for root rot and damping-off disease in a wide range of horticultural and agronomic crops. Unlike true fungi, this organism thrives in water-saturated environments, targeting the root systems of seedlings and young plants, which often leads to total crop failure if left unmanaged.
The host range for Pythium sterilum includes various vegetables, ornamentals, and greenhouse plants. It is particularly dangerous in hydroponic systems and container-grown plants where high moisture and nutrient availability allow the pathogen to spread aggressively through the root zone.
Symptoms typically manifest as stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and wilting, despite adequate irrigation. Careful inspection of the root system reveals browning, necrosis, and a slimy texture of the affected tissues. As the infection progresses, the epidermis of the roots sloughs off easily, exposing the vascular cylinder, ultimately resulting in the collapse of the plant.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Pythium sterilum include poor soil drainage, excessive irrigation, and low oxygen levels in the rooting medium. The pathogen produces motile zoospores that can swim through water films to reach healthy roots. Resting structures known as oospores allow the pathogen to survive in soil and contaminated equipment for extended periods.
Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical controls:
- Sterilization of soil, pots, and irrigation equipment to eliminate primary inoculum.
- Improving drainage and avoiding over-irrigation to maintain oxygen levels.
- Monitoring water sources for contamination and using water filtration or UV treatment.
- Application of targeted fungicides, such as metalaxyl or propamocarb, during early disease stages.
- Incorporation of biological control agents like Trichoderma species to protect the root zone.
