Description

Pythium uncinulatum is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen known for causing severe root rot in a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. Unlike true fungi, this organism thrives in aquatic environments, making it a particularly troublesome pathogen in greenhouse production, hydroponic systems, and poorly drained soils.

This pathogen primarily targets vegetable crops such as cucumbers, lettuce, and various brassicas. By attacking the root system, it impairs the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients. Consequently, even if the above-ground part of the plant appears healthy initially, it will soon show signs of stunted growth, chlorosis, and eventually wilting.

Symptoms of the infection manifest in several ways:

  • Darkening and necrosis of the root cortex
  • Decay and soft rot of fine root hairs
  • Reduction of the root mass, leading to plant instability
  • Widespread wilting that does not recover after irrigation

The development and spread of Pythium uncinulatum are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. Excessive moisture, waterlogged soil, and restricted oxygen availability facilitate the movement of motile zoospores through the soil water film. Contaminated irrigation water, equipment, and infected transplants are the most common vectors for introducing this pathogen into clean production areas.

To manage this disease, farmers must prioritize prevention through strict hygiene, such as disinfecting equipment and treating irrigation water. Soil and substrate sterilization are critical before planting. In established infestations, the application of targeted fungicides against oomycetes is necessary, often combined with the use of beneficial microorganisms like Trichoderma to suppress the pathogen in the root zone.
