Description
The causative agent of the disease is Pythium yorkensis, a pathogenic oomycete belonging to the group of soil-borne fungus-like organisms. This microscopic parasite specializes in attacking the root system of plants, triggering rot processes within tissues that hinder the normal absorption of water and mineral nutrients from the soil.
This species of Pythium affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including vegetables, ornamental plants, and field crops. Young seedlings and transplants are particularly vulnerable, as their root systems do not yet possess high resistance to infection, often leading to significant losses in young plantations.
The main symptoms of infection include darkening and softening of the root hairs, the appearance of necrotic lesions on the roots, and general plant stunting. The aerial parts begin to show signs of wilting even in well-moistened soil, as damaged roots lose the ability to transport moisture to the stems and leaves.
The development and spread of Pythium yorkensis are favored by high soil moisture, waterlogging, and low temperatures during the spring season. The pathogen persists in the substrate and plant debris for a long time in the form of oospores, which are resistant to adverse environmental conditions and activate when favorable hydrothermal regimes occur.
The economic impact of this pathogen lies in the reduction of crop productivity and the risk of total harvest loss in greenhouses or intensive vegetable farming. For protection, it is recommended to practice crop rotation, ensure proper soil drainage, disinfect substrates, and utilize fungicides based on biological or chemical active ingredients.
