Quaternaria is a fungal disease caused by pathogens of the genus Quaternaria, primarily involving the species Quaternaria quaternata. As an ascomycete fungus, it acts as a necrotrophic parasite that invades the bark and cambium layers of various hardwood trees. The disease is characterized by the breakdown of host tissues, which disrupts the tree’s vital vascular functions.
The host range for this pathogen includes several broad-leaved tree species, most notably beech, hornbeam, maple, and alder. It typically targets trees that have been predisposed by abiotic stressors such as drought, frost cracks, or mechanical injury. Once established, the fungus can progress aggressively, causing significant localized damage to the tree's structural integrity.
Key symptoms include the development of distinct black, pimple-like stroma on the bark surface. As the fungus colonizes the inner bark, the affected area becomes depressed, cracks, and eventually undergoes necrosis. Infected branches often display wilting leaves, stunted growth, and the eventual development of dieback, which reduces the overall vigor of the plant.
The life cycle of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Spores are released and disseminated by wind and splashing rain, especially during wet spring or autumn seasons. High humidity and poor aeration within the tree canopy facilitate the germination of spores on vulnerable bark sites, making moist, stagnant air conditions a primary driver of disease outbreaks.
Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management practices. Sanitation is paramount: pruning and destroying infected branches reduces the inoculum load significantly. It is essential to sanitize tools between trees to prevent cross-contamination. Furthermore, applying copper-based fungicides during the dormant season helps suppress spore development and provides a protective barrier for the bark.
