It functions as a opportunistic pathogen, primarily colonizing trees that have been weakened by environmental stressors or mechanical wounds.

This pathogen specifically affects species within genera such as Alnus (alder), Populus (poplar), and Salix (willow). By invading the cortical tissues and the cambium, the fungus interferes with the nutrient transport system, which can lead to localized dieback or the eventual death of branches if left unmanaged.

The primary symptoms include the formation of irregular, necrotic patches on the bark, which eventually become sunken and cracked. Within these necrotic areas, small, black, cushion-like stromata emerge, indicating the presence of fungal fruiting bodies (perithecia) that serve as sources of inoculum for further infection.
