Querciphoma canker is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Querciphoma. This fungus is primarily known for attacking the bark and vascular system of various woody plants, leading to localized necrotic lesions. The disease is characterized by its ability to persist in plant tissues and gradually compromise the structural integrity of branches and trunks.
The disease primarily affects oak species (Quercus), which are its main hosts in forest ecosystems and nursery settings. While mature, healthy trees may exhibit a certain degree of resistance, younger plants and those weakened by environmental stressors are particularly susceptible to infection, often resulting in significant growth reduction.
Symptoms of the infection typically include the development of darkened, sunken patches on the bark, which may eventually crack. As the fungus progresses, fruiting bodies appear as minute black dots on the infected bark surface. If the canker encircles a branch or trunk, it effectively restricts the flow of water and nutrients, causing dieback in the crown above the affected area.
Environmental conditions that favor the disease include high humidity, prolonged rainy periods, and temperature fluctuations. The pathogen enters the host through mechanical wounds, such as frost cracks, sunscald, or injuries caused by insects. Once established, the fungus can spread rapidly throughout the tree canopy under suitable climatic conditions.
