The causal agent of this disease is the heteroecious rust fungus Gymnosporangium clavipes. It completes its complex life cycle by alternating between two unrelated plant hosts: conifers, typically juniper species, which serve as overwintering sites, and pomaceous plants as the primary hosts.
This pathogen impacts a variety of species within the Rosaceae family. Most notably, it affects quince, domestic apple trees, pears, hawthorn, and serviceberry. The infection poses a significant threat to orchard health, as it causes systemic damage to foliage, developing fruit, and occasionally succulent twigs.
Symptoms typically appear as bright orange or rusty-red spots on the upper leaf surface. Over time, the lower surface develops characteristic aecia, which are specialized cup-shaped structures that release spores. Infected fruits often exhibit deformities, discoloration, and premature rot, rendering them unsuitable for market.
The development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures during spring. Wind currents transport spores from infected juniper plants to nearby fruit trees. Moist surfaces on the target plants are essential for the germination of spores and subsequent infection.
Management of the disease requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key measures include pruning out infected juniper branches and removing symptomatic fruit or foliage from trees. Applying appropriate fungicides during the bloom period and early development stages is crucial to preventing significant crop loss.
