Description
Radiomyces spectabilis is a fungal pathogen classified within the Mucorales order. It is recognized in agronomy as a mycoparasite that specifically targets cultivated edible mushrooms, such as Agaricus bisporus or Pleurotus species, competing for resources and causing significant tissue decay.
As a pathogen, it acts by invading the sporocarps (fruiting bodies) of the host fungus. The biological cycle of this mold is rapid, allowing it to colonize the substrate and the mushroom itself, effectively disrupting the metabolic processes of the host and inhibiting further development.
Symptoms initially appear as white, fine, cotton-like mycelial growth covering the surface of the mushroom. As the infection progresses, the tissues of the fruiting body undergo enzymatic degradation, leading to softening, discoloration, and a distinct foul odor, rendering the product unmarketable.
The development of Radiomyces spectabilis is highly dependent on environmental factors within the mushroom house. High humidity levels, lack of air circulation, and warm temperatures create an ideal environment for sporulation and rapid spread. Spores can be easily transported via equipment, human traffic, or contaminated air filtration systems.
Economic losses due to this pathogen can be severe, necessitating robust preventive measures. Agronomic management includes strict sanitation protocols, such as steam sterilization of substrates, controlling humidity levels below the threshold favored by the fungus, and isolating infected trays to prevent the airborne dispersal of spores across the production area.
