Raffaelea is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that exists in a unique symbiotic relationship with ambrosia beetles. These fungi are cultivated by beetles within their galleries in tree wood, serving as a primary food source for beetle larvae. However, this interaction often proves fatal for the host plant, as the fungus spreads through the tree's vascular system.

The host range of Raffaelea species includes a variety of hardwood trees, most notably species of the family Fagaceae, such as oaks and chestnuts. The most devastating impact is observed with Raffaelea quercivora, which is responsible for Japanese oak wilt, a disease that has caused significant mortality in oak populations across Asia.

The clinical signs of Raffaelea infection are characterized by rapid wilting of the foliage during the growing season. Leaves turn reddish-brown or yellowish and may stay attached to the branches. Internally, the wood exhibits vascular discoloration, appearing as dark, necrotic streaks that effectively prevent water transport to the upper parts of the tree.

The progression of the disease is strictly linked to the lifecycle of the beetle vector. The fungus is introduced into the tree as the adult beetle bores into the sapwood to construct galleries. Optimal temperatures for beetle flight and development directly correlate with the spread and intensity of the fungal infection within the stand.

Effective management strategies against Raffaelea focus on reducing the population of vector beetles and preventing the movement of infested timber. These include:

  • Sanitary felling of infected trees to remove breeding sites.
  • Burning or chipping infested wood to eliminate fungal spores and beetle larvae.
  • Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor and reduce local beetle populations.
  • Strict quarantine regulations regarding the transport of untreated logs.
