Raffaelea santoroi is a microscopic ascomycete fungus recognized as a significant plant pathogen affecting various woody species. It belongs to the group of ambrosia fungi that exist in a symbiotic relationship with specific wood-boring beetles, which facilitate the transmission of the pathogen into the host plant.
The fungus typically affects hardwood tree species, with records of its presence in oak (Quercus) populations. The transmission process occurs primarily through the galleries excavated by beetles, allowing the fungal spores to bypass the protective bark and directly colonize the plant's xylem tissue.
Symptoms of an infection include progressive dieback of the canopy, wilting of leaves, and premature chlorosis. Internally, the wood exhibits vascular discoloration and necrosis, which severely restricts the flow of water and essential nutrients, ultimately leading to the decline of the host tree.
The development and spread of Raffaelea santoroi are strongly linked to environmental conditions that favor the activity of its beetle vectors, particularly high humidity and stable temperatures. Trees weakened by drought, soil compaction, or prior physical damage are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by this pathogen.
