Ramaria stricta, commonly known as the upright coral fungus, belongs to the Gomphaceae family. While it is primarily classified as a saprotrophic fungus that thrives on decaying wood, in forestry and orchard management, it is acknowledged for its role in wood-decay processes that can affect weakened trees. It is not considered a primary pathogen of agricultural crops but acts as a decomposer within ecosystem dynamics.

The fungus is a causal agent of white rot. It breaks down lignin and cellulose within woody tissues, causing the wood to become soft and fibrous. Primarily affecting hardwoods and conifers, it colonizes stumps, fallen branches, and the root systems or basal parts of trees that are under stress due to drought, pests, or mechanical injury. Its presence on living specimens often signals an underlying decline in tree health.

Symptoms of infestation include the presence of multi-branched, yellowish-brown fruiting bodies appearing near the base of the trunk or on rotting wood. The internal wood tissue loses its structural integrity and exhibits a light, bleached appearance. As the decay progresses, the host plant may become susceptible to mechanical failure, which is particularly dangerous in forest stands and fruit orchards.

The development of Ramaria stricta is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures, typical of shaded forest environments. Spore dispersal occurs through wind and water, allowing the fungus to colonize new substrates. Dense planting environments where debris is not managed properly often see an increased incidence of such wood-decaying fungi.

To mitigate the risks associated with this fungus, effective management strategies are required:

  • Regular sanitation of stands, including the removal of dead or dying timber.
  • Systematic stump removal to eliminate potential fungal reservoirs.
  • Maintenance of tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and water management.
  • Protection of tree trunks from mechanical damage to prevent entry points for spores.
  • Application of specialized wound dressings after pruning to safeguard exposed wood.
