Ramularia leaf spot is a significant fungal disease affecting beet crops globally, caused by the fungus Ramularia beticola. It primarily impacts the foliage of the plants, leading to premature leaf senescence and a reduction in the overall photosynthetic capacity of the crop.

The disease affects sugar beet, red beet, and fodder beet. Because the plant relies on healthy leaves to store energy in the root, the damage caused by this pathogen directly correlates to lower yield and reduced sugar content, making it a serious concern for commercial growers.

Symptoms are characterized by the development of small, circular or irregular spots on the leaves. These spots usually measure 5–10 mm in diameter and are initially light brown with a darker border. In humid conditions, a visible white or gray velvety mold develops in the center of these spots.

The spread of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental factors. High humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 17 °C to 25 °C are ideal for the fungus to produce conidia, which are then spread to healthy plants by wind and rain splashes, leading to rapid disease development.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical measures. Rotating crops to reduce inoculum build-up in the soil and ensuring deep burial of crop residues are crucial. When disease pressure is high, professional fungicide applications are necessary to protect the yield.
