The disease is caused by the fungus Ramularia bistortae, an anamorphic fungus that specifically targets plants of the genus Bistorta. It acts as a biotrophic parasite, extracting nutrients from the host's tissues and utilizing the plant's metabolic pathways to sustain its own sporulation and dispersal cycles during the growing season.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include various species of bistort, often grown for their medicinal properties or as ornamental groundcovers. The fungus affects leaves and occasionally petioles, leading to structural damage that impairs the plant’s ability to perform photosynthesis and store energy in its root systems for the following year.

Clinical signs of the infection typically appear as localized lesions on the leaf surface. Initially, these spots are small and pale, eventually expanding into larger necrotic areas characterized by a whitish, dusty growth on the underside.

Providing adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow and selecting sites with good soil drainage can significantly mitigate the development of the disease. In professional cultivation, targeted fungicide applications may be necessary to control severe outbreaks.
