Description
Ramularia leaf spot is a fungal disease affecting safflower, caused by the pathogen Ramularia carthami. This fungus acts as a significant biotic stressor, colonizing leaves, stems, and bracts of the safflower plant, which disrupts normal development and leads to premature foliage senescence.
The host range of Ramularia carthami is primarily restricted to safflower (Carthamus tinctorius). The fungus survives between seasons as mycelium or sclerotia in crop residues and can also be seed-borne, making contaminated seeds a common primary source of field infestation.
Symptoms typically appear as small, angular or irregular-shaped brown spots. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, and a visible greyish moldy growth (conidiophores and conidia) forms on the underside of the leaf. Severe infections lead to extensive chlorosis, necrosis, and premature leaf drop.
Environmental factors are critical for the spread of this disease. Optimal conditions for infection include cool to moderate temperatures and high relative humidity, often associated with rainfall or heavy dew. Water splash facilitates the dispersal of conidia from the lower leaves to the upper canopy, accelerating the epidemic.

To mitigate these risks, farmers should employ an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
