Description
Ramularia leaf spot is a destructive fungal disease of barley caused by the pathogen Ramularia collo-cygni. Originally considered a minor pathogen, it has emerged as a major threat to global barley production, particularly in intensive agricultural systems where leaf health is critical for high yields.
The primary host of this pathogen is barley (both winter and spring varieties). While it can be found in a latent state on other grasses, the infection is most economically significant in barley crops, where it acts as a stress factor during the plant's reproductive development stages.
The characteristic symptoms include small, rectangular, reddish-brown spots surrounded by a yellow halo. These spots are restricted by the leaf veins, giving the leaf a distinct grid-like appearance. Under humid conditions, greyish-white conidia develop on the underside of the leaves, spreading the fungus further.
The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly long periods of leaf wetness and moderate temperatures. The fungus has a unique cycle where it exists as an endophyte within the plant tissue for several weeks before symptoms appear, often triggered by host physiological stress during grain filling.
The impact of Ramularia leaf spot involves significant reduction in photosynthesis, leading to shriveled grains and reduced yield. Effective control strategies involve the use of resistant cultivars, crop rotation to reduce inoculum pressure, and timely application of effective fungicides, specifically targeting the flag leaf and ear emergence stages to protect the upper canopy.
