The disease is caused by the fungus Ramularia endophylla, an obligate pathogen that specifically targets plants within the Lamiaceae family. The primary hosts of this pathogen are various species of Mentha, especially peppermint and spearmint. Infection typically leads to a decline in overall plant health, reduced vigor, and a significant decrease in both the biomass yield and the quality of essential oils extracted from the leaves.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as small, irregular or circular spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots often become necrotic, turning brown or black.
