Ramularia leaf spot, caused by the fungus Ramularia galegae, is a significant pathological condition affecting species of the Galega genus, commonly known as goat's rue. As an obligate parasite, this fungus targets the foliage of the host, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and diminished forage quality, which is critical for agricultural producers relying on this legume as a high-protein feed source.

The causal agent, Ramularia galegae, belongs to the Ascomycota phylum. It survives the winter in infected crop debris, stored in the soil or on the plant crowns. Once spring conditions become favourable, the fungus produces conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum. These spores are spread by wind or water splashing, facilitating the rapid colonization of new leaf tissue in the emerging crop canopy.

The primary symptoms manifest as distinct foliar lesions. Initially, these spots are small, chlorotic flecks that expand into brown, often angular or circular lesions. In cases of severe infection, the spots may coalesce, causing the leaf to turn yellow and eventually wither. During periods of high humidity, a characteristic white to greyish mold-like growth appears on the underside of the leaves, representing the sporulation structures of the fungus.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the progression of the disease. Ramularia galegae thrives in cool to moderate temperatures accompanied by prolonged leaf wetness or high atmospheric humidity. Fields with dense plant stands, which lack sufficient air circulation, are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks, as these areas retain the moisture necessary for fungal spore germination and penetration.

  • Sanitation practices, including the removal or deep incorporation of crop residues.
  • Maintaining optimal planting densities to ensure adequate air circulation and reduce canopy humidity.
