Ramularia karelii is a pathogenic fungus that specifically targets plants within the Polygonaceae family, with Rumex acetosa (common sorrel) being the primary host. The disease is recognized as a significant constraint in sorrel production, often resulting in severe foliage damage that renders the leaves unsuitable for commercial market distribution.
The host range is centered on sorrel, which is frequently grown as a perennial crop. Because the plant remains in the field for several years, the fungus can easily establish a stable life cycle, overwintering in plant debris or within the soil. This persistence makes the management of Ramularia karelii a critical task for growers aiming to maintain high-quality green leaf yields.
Symptoms typically appear on the leaves as irregular or circular spots. Initially, these spots are yellowish-brown but darken as the tissue dies.
