Ramularia leaf spot, caused by the fungus Ramularia onobrychidis, is a notable fungal disease that affects sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia). This pathogen specializes in attacking legume crops, leading to significant yield losses in forage production systems across various agricultural regions.

The host range of this disease is primarily limited to sainfoin. The fungus colonizes the plant tissues, specifically leaves and stems, by producing toxins and enzymes that break down cellular structures. This process leads to reduced photosynthetic efficiency, lower protein content in forage, and early defoliation of the crop.

Symptoms typically appear as irregular or angular spots on the leaves, starting as small light-colored areas that later turn brown or grayish. Under conditions of high humidity, a characteristic white powdery coating of conidia develops on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, causing significant tissue death.

The development of Ramularia onobrychidis is heavily dependent on moisture. Frequent rainfall, high humidity, and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for spore germination and infection. The pathogen overwinters on infected plant debris or in contaminated seed, making sanitation an essential part of the disease management cycle.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the disease impact. Farmers are encouraged to employ crop rotation to disrupt the pathogen's life cycle and remove or bury crop residues deeply to prevent primary inoculum release. If environmental conditions favor a major outbreak, applying approved fungicides at the initial symptom stage is recommended to protect the yield quality.
