Description

The fungus Ramularia polygoni is the causal agent of a specific leaf spot disease primarily affecting plants within the Polygonum genus. As a hyphomycete, it functions as an opportunistic plant pathogen that establishes itself on foliage, causing necrotic tissue damage that disrupts the physiological functions of the host plant.

This pathogen targets various knotweed species, including those cultivated for pharmaceutical use, as well as several wild-growing related species. The economic impact is significant in commercial production, as the loss of functional leaf area directly correlates with decreased accumulation of secondary metabolites and reduced overall plant biomass.

Symptoms are manifested as distinct spots on the leaves. Initially appearing as small points, these spots eventually expand into irregular or angular shapes limited by the leaf veins. A key diagnostic feature is the light-colored center of the spot, often surrounded by a dark brown or reddish halo. During periods of high humidity, a delicate, grayish fungal growth appears on the underside of the leaves.

The fungus overwinters on infected crop debris left in the field, surviving as dormant mycelium or specialized survival structures. During the growing season, wind-borne conidia and rain-splash facilitate the rapid spread of the pathogen to healthy tissues.

  • Rigorous removal and destruction of crop residues after harvest.
  • Implementation of appropriate crop rotation schedules.
  • Application of targeted fungicides when environmental conditions favor infection.
  • Maintaining optimal plant spacing to promote air circulation and reduce humidity around the canopy.
