Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Ramularia pratensis, a member of the Hyphomycetes order. This pathogen specializes in infecting sorrel plants, causing characteristic spotting that leads to tissue necrosis and significant degradation of the crop's vegetative parts.
The primary host for this fungus is the genus Rumex, particularly common sorrel (Rumex acetosa). The pathogen is prevalent in many regions where humidity and moderate temperatures remain constant, creating favorable conditions for both primary infection and secondary spread during the growing season.
Symptoms initially appear as small, irregularly shaped spots, which are initially brownish or white, eventually developing a distinct dark border. During high humidity, a greyish powdery coating develops on the undersides of the leaves, marking the presence of conidiophores. As the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, causing leaves to wither and die prematurely.
Environmental conditions such as high moisture, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense plant stands strongly favor the development of Ramularia pratensis. The fungus persists in the soil on infected plant debris, acting as the primary inoculum source that spreads rapidly when temperature ranges between 15°C and 22°C are present.
The economic impact of this disease is substantial, as it directly damages the foliage, which is the marketable part of the crop. Infected leaves become unmarketable due to discoloration and necrosis. Severe infestations can reduce crop yields significantly, necessitating effective management to preserve the quality and quantity of the sorrel harvest.
