Ramularia leaf spot, caused by the fungus Ramularia psoraleae, is a common pathological condition affecting plants of the Psoralea genus. This disease primarily impacts the foliage, leading to necrosis and premature leaf drop. As a specialized pathogen, it requires specific environmental conditions to thrive and complete its life cycle within the host tissue.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of distinct lesions on leaves. Initially, these spots are chlorotic, but as the fungus matures, they turn dark brown or greyish with clearly defined margins. Under humid conditions, a characteristic whitish fungal growth composed of conidiophores and conidia becomes visible on the underside of the leaves. These structures serve as the primary inoculum for secondary infections throughout the growing season.
The development of Ramularia psoraleae is heavily favored by cool to moderate temperatures and high ambient humidity. The fungus typically survives between seasons as mycelium or dormant spores on infected crop debris or within the soil.
