Texas rust is a specialized plant disease incited by the fungus Ravenelia texensis, a member of the rust fungi order. This pathogen is known for its complex life cycle and its specific relationship with host plants, primarily within the legume family, often localized in arid and semi-arid regions.
The fungus predominantly affects various species of the Dalea genus. As an obligate parasite, Ravenelia texensis derives its nutrients directly from the living cells of the host, which can lead to significant physiological stress and reduced vitality in affected vegetation during heavy infection periods.
