Readeriella is a genus of fungi recognized as significant pathogens affecting various plant species, most notably Eucalyptus. As a fungal agent, it belongs to the group of Ascomycota and is primarily responsible for leaf spot diseases, which can lead to severe defoliation in both nursery settings and mature forest plantations.
The primary hosts for Readeriella are diverse species of Eucalyptus. While it mostly affects the foliage, the impact is systemic in terms of plant health, as the reduction of the photosynthetic surface area directly affects the growth rates, wood quality, and overall vigor of the trees.
The characteristic symptoms begin as small chlorotic lesions on the leaf surface. As the fungus colonizes the leaf tissue, these spots expand and turn dark brown or black. A key diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which rupture the epidermis of the leaf to release spores.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures. The pathogen spreads via conidia, which are dispersed primarily by wind and rain splash. These environmental factors make the disease highly contagious in dense stands or poorly ventilated nursery environments.
Economic damage is caused by premature leaf senescence and shed. To mitigate the impact of Readeriella, integrated pest management is essential. This includes selecting resistant genotypes, maintaining optimal plant spacing to promote airflow, implementing strict sanitation practices to remove infected debris, and the targeted application of fungicides in nursery facilities.
