Description

The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Rectifusarium ventricosum, a member of the diverse Fusarium genus. This pathogen is known for infecting the plant's vascular system, causing systemic blockage that prevents water and mineral transport. It is classified as a vascular wilt, or tracheomycosis, and can lead to rapid wilting and eventual death of the host plant.

A wide variety of agricultural crops, including cereals, legumes, and several vegetable species, are susceptible to this pathogen. Since the fungus is soil-borne, it can persist in the environment for many years as chlamydospores on crop residues or within the soil matrix, making it a persistent challenge for farmers in diverse geographic regions.

Symptoms typically begin with a loss of turgor in the lower leaves, eventually progressing upward. A diagnostic sign is the darkening and browning of the vascular bundles, which can be observed by making a cross-section of the stem. In severe cases, the root system shows signs of rot, and a characteristic fungal mycelium may appear on the soil-line tissue under high humidity.

The development and spread of Rectifusarium ventricosum are favored by high soil moisture levels and temperatures ranging from 20 to 25°C. Stress factors, such as mechanical damage to roots, insect feeding, or poor soil aeration, significantly increase the plant's susceptibility to infection by facilitating fungal entry.

The damage caused by this disease is substantial, resulting in significant yield losses and reduced crop quality. Beyond direct yield impact, the presence of mycotoxins produced by the fungus makes infected grain unsafe for human or animal consumption, which imposes strict economic constraints and necessitates rigorous monitoring of harvest safety.

  • Implement long-term crop rotation cycles to reduce soil pathogen load.
  • Use certified, high-quality seeds treated with systemic fungicides.
  • Maintain soil pH at optimal levels through liming to inhibit fungal growth.
  • Ensure adequate drainage to prevent excessive soil moisture accumulation.
