Requienella alaterni is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Requienella alaterni, which primarily targets plants within the Rhamnaceae family. This pathogen is known for its impact on evergreen shrubs, often found in Mediterranean environments where climatic conditions favor its reproductive cycles.

The causative agent belongs to the phylum Ascomycota. It acts as an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the bark and woody tissues of the host plant. By invading the cortical layers, the fungus interrupts the normal physiological processes, leading to localized or systemic tissue necrosis.

Characteristic symptoms include the appearance of numerous small, black perithecia visible on the surface of the bark. These structures indicate the reproductive phase of the fungus. As the infection progresses, affected branches may exhibit signs of dieback, chlorosis, and general wilting, ultimately compromising the entire shrub's health.
