Resinicium is a genus of fungi within the order Hymenochaetales, primarily recognized for causing wood decay in various tree species. These fungi are significant agents of decomposition in forest ecosystems, but under specific stress conditions, they transition into parasitic organisms that damage the vitality of coniferous and deciduous stands.

The primary hosts for these pathogens are coniferous trees, specifically spruce and pine species. When trees are subjected to environmental stress, such as drought or physical damage, the susceptibility to infection increases significantly, allowing the fungus to establish itself within the vascular system and heartwood.

Symptoms of the infection typically include localized discoloration of the wood, the presence of resupinate fungal growth on the bark or wood surface, and progressive chlorosis of the needles or leaves. As the root system or the base of the stem becomes compromised, trees exhibit reduced growth rates and become increasingly prone to windthrow.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental variables such as humidity, soil aeration, and temperature fluctuations. Spread occurs primarily via airborne basidiospores during favorable moisture conditions, but root-to-root contact in dense plantations remains a major vector for the colonization of adjacent healthy trees.

Preventive measures include minimizing mechanical injury during forest thinning, maintaining optimal stand density to ensure proper airflow, and monitoring for early indicators of decay to minimize economic losses in forestry operations.
