Description

The genus Resupinatus refers to a group of saprotrophic fungi that are commonly misidentified as plant pathogens. In agricultural environments, these fungi do not attack healthy, living plant tissues; instead, they colonize dead or decaying organic matter, such as old branches, stumps, or damaged bark on fruit trees, acting as natural decomposers.

These fungi belong to the Basidiomycota phylum. Their biological role is the enzymatic breakdown of lignin and cellulose within dead wood. They are essential for ecosystem health, as they recycle nutrients back into the soil, but their presence on trees is often a visible indicator of previous structural damage or the presence of significant necrotic wood tissue.

Symptoms of their presence include small, cup-shaped, or kidney-shaped fruiting bodies that appear directly on the surface of the bark. In humid conditions, these structures may appear gelatinous, while in drier weather, they become firm and leathery. They are typically found in clusters on shaded or moist parts of trees that are already showing signs of senescence.

The development of Resupinatus is entirely dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and the availability of suitable woody substrates. They do not infect healthy trees but utilize opportunistic entry points such as pruning wounds, frost cracks, or mechanical damage where the protective bark layer has been removed, allowing their mycelium to establish.

As they are not primary pathogens, no chemical fungicides are specifically required to combat them. Effective management focuses on cultural practices that maintain orchard health:

  • performing regular sanitary pruning to remove dead or dying wood;
  • properly sealing large pruning cuts to accelerate healing;
  • improving air circulation within the canopy to reduce localized humidity;
  • clearing orchard debris to prevent the accumulation of potential substrates.
