Description
Larch needle cast, caused by the fungus Rhabdocline laricis, is a significant disease affecting larch species. This pathogen targets the needles, leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature needle drop, which can severely impact the tree's vitality and growth performance if left unmanaged.
The disease is caused by an ascomycete fungus that completes its life cycle on the host tree needles. The pathogen survives in infected tissue and releases spores during wet, humid weather, which are then disseminated by wind and splashing raindrops to infect new, emerging needles throughout the growing season.
Symptoms typically include the appearance of yellow or brownish spots on the needles. As the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, turning the needle brown and brittle. Close examination often reveals small, elongated fruiting bodies (apothecia) of the fungus erupting through the epidermis of the affected needles.
High humidity and prolonged wet periods are the primary factors that facilitate the development and spread of Rhabdocline laricis. Dense stands with poor air circulation are particularly susceptible to infection, as these conditions maintain the moisture levels required for fungal spore germination and penetration.
Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Proper forest management, including selecting resistant varieties and thinning dense stands to improve airflow, is essential. During severe outbreaks, applying registered fungicides can help protect valuable nursery stock and ornamental specimens.
