Description

Rhabdocline needle cast is a significant fungal disease caused by species of the genus Rhabdocline, most notably Rhabdocline pseudotsugae. It primarily affects Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). This disease is notorious for causing premature needle drop, which can significantly stunt tree growth and reduce the timber quality and aesthetic value of affected plantations.

The host range is largely specific to Douglas Fir. The disease is particularly problematic in nurseries and young plantations where high tree density and poor air circulation create a microclimate conducive to infection. Older trees may also be affected, though they usually exhibit less severe decline compared to saplings.

Symptoms typically manifest in the spring, characterized by yellow to orange-brown spots or mottled patches on the previous year's needles. As the fungus matures, it forms elongated fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the underside of the needles, which appear as reddish-brown or orange ridges. By early summer, heavily infected needles turn brown and drop, resulting in thin, sparse foliage.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture. Spore dispersal is triggered by wet weather and splashing rain during the spring budding period. The infection spreads rapidly in cool, humid climates where moisture remains on the foliage for extended periods, making dense stands especially vulnerable to rapid infestation.

Management strategies focus on cultural and chemical control. It is essential to choose planting sites with good air movement and to avoid excessive spacing density. Removing and destroying infected fallen needles or severely diseased branches can reduce the inoculum load. In severe cases, fungicide applications during the spring spore-release period are necessary to protect the new foliage and break the disease cycle.
