Description
Douglas fir needle cast, caused by the fungus Rhabdocline pseudotsugae, is a significant pathology affecting Douglas fir trees. This fungal infection results in needles turning yellow or brown and dropping prematurely, which can lead to severe defoliation of infected branches.
The disease primarily targets the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). While mature trees can withstand some defoliation, young nursery stock, Christmas tree plantations, and younger landscape trees are particularly susceptible to severe damage and growth stunting.
Initial symptoms are characterized by small chlorotic spots on the needles, which eventually expand into reddish-brown blotches or bands. Later in the season, the fungus produces fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the underside of the needles. These appear as small, raised, orange-brown to brown streaks, leading to needle abscission in late spring or summer.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the pathogen. Wet, humid weather during the spring when new needles are emerging is essential for the germination of fungal spores. Wind and splashing rain facilitate the spread of spores from infected older needles to the new, healthy growth.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key practices include:
- Pruning and removing heavily infected branches to reduce the volume of inoculum.
- Improving air circulation around trees to reduce humidity within the foliage canopy.
- Applying fungicides during the spring, specifically when new needles are half-emerged, to protect them from infection.
