Rhabdospora is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Sphaeropsidales, which includes several pathogenic species capable of causing disease in various plant hosts. The disease cycle is characterized by the formation of pycnidia, small fruiting bodies containing conidia, which serve as the primary source of infection spread within a crop canopy.

The host range is diverse, affecting field crops, ornamentals, and tree species. The fungus acts as a parasite on leaves, stems, and fruits, utilizing the host's nutrients to sustain its development. In many cases, it exploits plant wounds or physiological stress, making plants vulnerable during periods of environmental instability.

Initial symptoms manifest as irregular necrotic spots, often tan or brown, bordered by a darker halo. As the infection progresses, the diagnostic feature appears: numerous black, pinhead-sized pycnidia scattered within the necrotic tissue. This leads to chlorosis, tissue collapse, and premature senescence of the foliage.

Developmental factors for Rhabdospora species are heavily dependent on high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Moisture is essential for the liberation of spores from pycnidia, which are then dispersed via rain splash or wind currents. The fungus survives unfavorable seasons by persisting in crop debris or as dormant mycelium in infected plant tissues.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical intervention. Eliminating potential inoculum sources by tilling under or burning infected stubble is crucial. Furthermore, the application of protective or systemic fungicides is recommended during the early stages of disease appearance to prevent large-scale outbreaks and minimize yield losses.
