Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Rhabdospora oudemansii, a pathogenic organism known for infecting various shrubs and woody plants. It operates by colonizing the leaf tissue, leading to localized cell death and the disruption of normal plant metabolic functions.

Host plants typically include several woody species, with particular susceptibility noted in Lonicera (honeysuckle) varieties. The fungus targets foliage primarily but can also affect succulent shoots, especially under stress, leading to significant physiological impact on the host plant.

Symptoms of the infection include the formation of distinct spots on the leaves. These lesions often transition from pale yellow or chlorotic zones to dark brown, necrotic areas. As the disease progresses, the pathogen develops pycnidia, appearing as small, dark, raised specks within the center of the infected tissue.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Rhabdospora oudemansii. High relative humidity, persistent dew, and frequent rainfall are key factors that facilitate spore dispersal and infection. Dense foliage and poor airflow within the plant canopy significantly exacerbate the spread of the fungus.

The damage caused by this pathogen is primarily related to a reduction in photosynthetic capacity. When the foliage is heavily infected, the plant weakens, leading to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a compromised ability to survive winter dormancy or secondary stress factors.

Effective management strategies combine cultural practices and chemical control. Key preventive measures include pruning infected branches to improve aeration, collecting and disposing of fallen leaves to remove fungal inocula, and applying fungicides when weather conditions are conducive to disease development.
