Description
Rhipidiales infection refers to diseases caused by fungi within the Rhipidiales order. These organisms, primarily known as soil-inhabiting saprotrophs, can become opportunistic pathogens when environmental conditions favor their rapid colonization of plant roots, particularly in glasshouse environments with high humidity levels.
The biology of these pathogens is distinct due to their fan-shaped sporangiophores. They thrive in anaerobic or low-oxygen soil conditions caused by excessive irrigation. As they spread, they release enzymes that degrade root tissues, effectively impairing the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients from the substrate.
Commonly affected plants include various vegetable seedlings and ornamental pot plants. The pathogen targets the root zone, causing systemic stress to the plant. Because the infection is often soil-borne, it can easily spread through contaminated water sources, gardening tools, or the movement of infested soil between different crop batches.
Key symptoms of the disease include the following:
- stunted growth and overall lack of vigor;
- wilting of foliage despite moist soil conditions;
- darkening and softening of root tissues (root rot symptoms);
- yellowing of lower leaves, often resembling nutrient deficiency.
Management strategies focus on soil aeration and precise water management. Preventing soil saturation is the most effective preventative measure. Growers should utilize sterilized substrates and implement strict sanitation protocols for tools and pots. In severe cases, targeted fungicide application and prompt removal of infected plant material are necessary to curb the spread of the pathogen.
