Rhizidiomycetaceae is a family of chytridiomycete fungi containing obligate parasites that affect algae, invertebrates, and higher plants. In an agronomic context, these organisms are identified as soil-borne pathogens that target the root systems of crops, leading to significant physiological stress and the development of destructive fungal diseases.

The pathogen is a primitive fungus that utilizes uniflagellate zoospores to actively navigate through moist soil environments. These motile spores are highly effective at locating host roots. The fungus also produces resting spores, which allow it to persist in the soil for extended periods, remaining viable despite fluctuating environmental conditions until a suitable host becomes available.

Symptoms of an infection are often characterized by stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and a general loss of plant turgor. These signs are frequently mistaken for nutrient deficiency or drought stress. As the infection advances, the root system typically shows signs of necrosis, turning brown and decaying, which eventually leads to the wilting and total death of the host plant.

In such conditions, the zoospores move rapidly between plants, causing widespread infections across entire production areas in a very short amount of time.

Effective management and prevention strategies focus on strict irrigation control and the installation of high-quality drainage systems to prevent water saturation. Key preventive measures include using certified disease-free seeds, disinfecting growing media, and applying targeted fungicides. Implementing proper crop rotation is also essential to reduce the inoculum pressure in the soil and protect future harvests.
