Rhizocarpaceae is a family of crustose lichens that are often misunderstood as plant pathogens. It is essential to clarify that these organisms are not plant diseases; they do not infect crops or damage healthy plant tissues. Instead, they are epilithic organisms, meaning they primarily grow on rocks, stone walls, and other solid mineral substrates.

The biology of these organisms is based on a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga. The fungal component provides structural support and moisture retention, while the photosynthetic partner provides nutrients. Unlike true plant diseases, they do not rely on host plants for sustenance, as they derive their nutrients from the atmosphere and the surface they occupy.

While they are not crop pathogens, they may be found in agricultural environments on farm infrastructure, such as stone fences or concrete structures. Symptoms appear as hard, flat, and crust-like patches of various colors, often with black reproductive structures called apothecia scattered across the thallus, which can be mistaken by observers for disease symptoms.

Environmental conditions that favor their development include high humidity, long-term exposure to sunlight, and lack of disturbance. They are slow-growing and highly sensitive to air pollutants, making them excellent bioindicators for environmental health. Because they are not parasitic, their presence is not a sign of poor crop health but rather a reflection of the environmental stability of the area.

There are no protective measures or treatments needed for Rhizocarpaceae, as they do not affect plant health or agricultural yield. If they are growing on surfaces where they are unwanted, such as architectural stone or decorative masonry, manual removal or the application of specialized biocides can be used to clear the surface. They do not pose a risk to farm management operations.
