Rhizochrysidales represent an order of golden algae that can significantly impact plant health in agricultural settings, particularly in hydroponic systems and humid greenhouses. These organisms are known for their ability to thrive in moisture-rich environments, often colonizing substrates and root zones.
As a pathogen-like factor, these algae typically disrupt the normal functioning of the root system. While not a conventional fungal disease, their presence is classified as a physiological disorder because they deplete oxygen and nutrients, preventing the roots from performing vital gas exchange and mineral uptake functions.
The primary crops affected are greenhouse vegetables, ornamental plants, and hydroponically grown crops. Typical symptoms include the formation of a green or brown biofilm on the substrate surface, stunted plant development, chlorosis of the leaves, and visible decay or lack of vigor in the root hair system.
The development of these algae is facilitated by high light intensity, constant high humidity, and an abundance of mineral nutrients (specifically phosphates and nitrates) in the irrigation water. This combination creates an ideal environment for rapid population growth, leading to the formation of mucilaginous mats that seal the surface of the soil or growing media.
Effective control and prevention strategies involve limiting light exposure to the substrate surface through the use of opaque covers or mulch. Furthermore, maintaining proper irrigation balance, avoiding nutrient runoff, and implementing regular disinfection of irrigation systems are crucial steps in preventing algal blooms that could jeopardize crop health.
