Description
The causative agent of the disease is the soil-borne pathogenic fungus Rhizoctonia butinii, a member of the Basidiomycota phylum. It survives in the soil as sclerotia or mycelial fragments, which serve as the primary inoculum source for new infections in favorable environmental conditions.
This pathogen primarily targets coniferous species, posing a severe threat to nurseries and landscape plantations. Conifer seedlings and young trees, such as spruce, pine, and fir, are highly susceptible, with the fungus attacking the root system and the root collar, leading to systemic physiological stress.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic browning and decay of the root collar tissue, resulting in "damping-off" or wilting of the seedlings. As the root system fails to transport water and nutrients, the needles become discolored, turning chlorotic or brownish, eventually leading to the death of the tree.
