Description
The Rhizodiscinaceae family belongs to the group of ascomycete fungi, which in the context of plant pathology are identified as agents causing various plant tissue damage. These micromycetes specialize in decomposing organic matter, often displaying characteristics of both saprotrophs and weak parasites that can infect weakened or damaged plant parts.
The type of disease caused by members of this family is most often classified as necrosis or tissue decay. The pathogen enters the plant through natural openings (stomata, lenticels) or mechanical injuries to the epidermis, after which the fungal mycelium begins to develop actively in the intercellular space, degrading the host's cell walls.
The susceptible crops include mainly perennial woody and shrub plants, as well as some wild herbaceous species. In agronomic practice, the symptoms manifest as local spots, discoloration of leaves and stems, and in the case of progressing infection, gradual tissue death and the formation of specific fungal fruiting bodies.
The development of the pathogen depends directly on humidity levels and temperature conditions. Rhizodiscinaceae fungi spread intensively under high humidity, stagnant water in the root zone, or a lack of proper crown ventilation. Optimal temperatures for sporulation usually range within moderate heat, making the spring and autumn periods the most critical for infection.
The harmfulness of this pathogen manifests in the inhibition of the overall physiological state of the plant, a reduction in the photosynthetic surface area, and a potential decrease in crop yield. Protection measures include regular sanitary pruning of infected areas, adherence to proper irrigation regimes, improvement of planting aeration, and, if necessary, the application of broad-spectrum fungicides to prevent large-scale infection.
