Rhizopogon reticulatus is a basidiomycete fungus that, under certain environmental conditions, affects the root zones of tree seedlings. While recognized in some contexts for its mycorrhizal potential, in controlled nursery environments, its aggressive colonization of root systems is often treated as a disease-like condition that hampers the growth and development of coniferous crops.
The pathogen spreads through extensive mycelial cords, known as rhizomorphs, which encompass the roots. This fungal activity interferes with the tree's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients from the soil. The primary hosts affected by this condition are young seedlings, particularly those in the Pinaceae family, which are vulnerable to competition with the fungal mass.
The main symptoms include a visible reticulated white or yellow netting on the root surface. Infected seedlings frequently exhibit stunted growth, chlorotic needles, and a significant reduction in overall vigor. In severe cases, the restricted access to nutrients leads to root degradation and potential seedling mortality if environmental stress factors are also present.
The spread of the fungus is facilitated by high soil moisture, poor drainage, and the accumulation of organic debris. Rhizopogon reticulatus thrives in temperate climates with optimal soil temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. Soil acidity also plays a critical role, as acidic environments often favor the expansion of these mycelial networks over beneficial rhizospheric bacteria.
Management strategies focus on maintaining optimal soil health and moisture levels. Producers should ensure proper irrigation management to avoid waterlogged conditions and promote adequate soil aeration. The application of biological control agents, such as beneficial fungi or bacteria that compete with Rhizopogon species, serves as a proactive measure to maintain seedling root health in commercial nursery settings.
