Description

Rhizosphaera needle cast is a prevalent fungal disease caused by the pathogen Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii. This fungus specifically targets the needles of various coniferous species, primarily impacting their ability to conduct photosynthesis. When left untreated, the disease causes significant needle drop, leading to the thinning of the crown and severe stress for the affected host tree.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are spruce trees, with blue spruce (Picea pungens) being exceptionally susceptible. While it thrives in the lower canopy of older trees, it can also infect younger plants in nurseries or dense landscape plantings. The fungus is particularly problematic in areas with high humidity and poor airflow, which facilitate the rapid spread of the disease.

Symptoms typically begin with a slight yellowing of the needles, which eventually transition to a purplish-brown or gray color. If you examine the underside of these discolored needles using a hand lens, you will see tiny, black, fuzzy-looking dots emerging from the stomatal rows. These dots are the fruiting bodies of the fungus, confirming the presence of Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on moisture. Rain splashes and wind carry the spores from old, infected needles to new, healthy growth during moist weather conditions in the spring and early summer. Because the needles can remain attached to the tree even after death, they act as a persistent reservoir of inoculum throughout the growing season.

Management strategies focus on reducing the fungal population and improving environmental conditions. Key control measures include:

  • Pruning lower branches to increase airflow and reduce humidity levels.
  • Removing and destroying fallen needles to eliminate the primary source of infection.
  • Applying fungicides containing copper or chlorothalonil during the bud-break period to protect new growth.
  • Ensuring proper plant spacing to prevent the disease from spreading between trees.
