Rhodocollybia is a genus of fungi commonly found in forest ecosystems that can occasionally impact cultivated plants by causing root decay and collar rot. While primarily saprotrophic, these fungi act as opportunistic pathogens when environmental conditions favor their development, attacking the root systems of weakened or stressed plants.
The host range of Rhodocollybia includes various ornamental shrubs, fruit trees, and perennial crops. The pathogen typically establishes itself in the root zone, exploiting damaged or necrotic tissues. Over time, the fungus spreads through the root system, severely impairing the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients.
Infected plants exhibit clear symptoms such as stunted growth, chlorosis of leaves, and wilting during dry periods. An examination of the root system often reveals softened, discolored tissues and a distinctive fungal odor. In advanced stages, mushrooms (fruiting bodies) may emerge at the base of the plant, indicating extensive internal decay.

The pathogen thrives in cool, moist conditions where the plant’s natural resistance is weakened by environmental stress or poor soil aeration.
