Rhodonia placenta (also known as Postia placenta) is a destructive wood-decaying fungus belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum. It is widely recognized as a primary agent responsible for rapid brown rot, which significantly compromises the structural integrity of timber by selectively degrading cellulose components while leaving the lignin matrix relatively intact.
This pathogen primarily targets coniferous wood species, including pine, spruce, and fir. It is a common problem in forestry and construction, frequently found in buildings, outdoor structures, utility poles, and stored lumber. Due to its resilience, it is often referred to in the context of wood durability testing and building pathology.
Symptoms of an infection include a distinct brownish discoloration of the wood, which eventually becomes brittle. The wood tends to shrink and crack across the grain, forming small cubic fragments. Externally, one might observe a white to pinkish mycelial mat growing on the surface of the affected material, signaling an active stage of decay.
The development and spread of the fungus are strictly dependent on environmental moisture levels, typically requiring wood moisture content between 30% and 50% and optimal temperatures. It is notably resistant to several common wood preservatives, which makes it a persistent threat to structural elements that are improperly maintained or exposed to chronic humidity.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Proper design and construction to minimize moisture traps and allow for adequate ventilation.
- Pressure treatment of timber with specialized copper or boron-based preservatives.
- Ensuring a physical break between wood components and ground contact to prevent capillary moisture uptake.
