Rhodophyllus (now commonly recognized under the genus Entoloma) is a genus of fungi that includes species capable of acting as opportunistic plant pathogens. These fungi primarily target the subterranean parts of plants, causing decay and interfering with the vital nutrient uptake processes necessary for crop development and yield production.
The disease is caused by basidiomycete fungi that dwell in the soil. These pathogens are highly persistent, capable of surviving for long periods on organic debris, which makes the management of contaminated soil a significant challenge for professional agronomists and landscape managers.
Target crops include a wide range of fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and certain vegetable species. The pathogen is particularly active in environments where soil structure and aeration are compromised, leading to physiological stress in the host plants and making them more susceptible to fungal colonisation.
