Rhodosporidium infection is a fungal disease caused by yeast-like fungi from the Rhodosporidium genus. While often found in nature as saprophytes, under specific agronomic conditions, these fungi can behave as pathogens, colonizing plant surfaces and significantly affecting the physiological health of various agricultural and horticultural crops.

This pathogen affects a broad spectrum of plants, ranging from commercial grain crops to delicate fruit and vegetable species. The fungus is frequently identified in the phyllosphere, where it competes with beneficial microorganisms, and can cause significant degradation of crop quality during both the pre-harvest growth period and post-harvest storage.

The visual symptoms of the infection often involve the development of distinctive pink or reddish colored colonies on the plant surface. These deposits disrupt normal gas exchange and photosynthesis, eventually leading to chlorosis, tissue softening, and in severe cases, the necrosis of the infected plant parts, which negatively affects total yield.

Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, are the primary drivers of Rhodosporidium proliferation. Poor agricultural hygiene, stagnant air in greenhouses or storage facilities, and high plant density create a microclimate that is ideal for the rapid spread and establishment of the fungal colonies.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to disease prevention. Key measures include maintaining optimal aeration to reduce humidity, implementing strict crop rotation, and ensuring post-harvest storage areas are dry and disinfected. When necessary, targeted fungicides may be utilized, though cultural practices remain the first line of defense to prevent an outbreak.
