Description
Rhopalomycosis is a fungal disease caused by members of the Rhopalomyces genus. As a group of Zygomycetes, these fungi are biologically unique due to their specialized conidiophores. While often studied as entomopathogens (organisms that infect insects), they can opportunistically infect plant tissues, especially when the host is under stress or environmental conditions are optimal for fungal colonization.
The disease primarily affects crops grown in high-humidity environments, such as greenhouses. Vulnerable plants include young seedlings, ornamental plants, and various vegetable starts. The pathogen often colonizes the root zone and basal stem areas, causing damage that disrupts water and nutrient uptake, leading to sudden wilting or collapse of the plant.
Symptoms are identified by the presence of a white, cottony mycelium coating the affected parts of the plant, often appearing at the soil line. As the infection progresses, the tissues turn soft and necrotic, frequently appearing water-soaked. In advanced stages, the fungus may produce characteristic reproductive structures that give the mycelial mat a granular appearance under magnification.
The development of Rhopalomyces is heavily dependent on excessive moisture and poor ventilation. The fungus thrives in stagnant air and over-saturated soil, which prevents the roots from respiring and makes them more susceptible to invasion. Temperatures between 18°C and 24°C are ideal for rapid fungal growth, allowing the pathogen to spread quickly through a greenhouse bench or seed tray.
Integrated pest management is the most effective approach to combating this disease. Preventive measures include ensuring good drainage, utilizing sterile growing media, and maintaining optimal airflow throughout the growing area. If an outbreak occurs, affected plants should be promptly removed and destroyed to prevent secondary spread. Fungicidal treatments should be applied based on local recommendations and the specific sensitivity of the cultivated crops.
