Rhopographus filicinus is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing a specific type of blight on fern fronds and petioles. It belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and is known for its ability to persist on dead or decaying organic plant matter, eventually attacking weakened or stressed living fern tissues.

The biology of the fungus involves the formation of distinctive black, stromatic structures on the surface of the infected fern parts. Within these structures, the fungus produces spores (ascospores) that are disseminated by wind or splashing water, allowing the disease to spread rapidly across dense clusters of host plants.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, dark spots or streaks that gradually enlarge and coalesce. As the infection progresses, the tissues around the fungus die off, leading to necrotic lesions, yellowing, and eventually the browning and brittle collapse of the frond segments. The presence of black fruiting bodies is a key diagnostic feature.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of Rhopographus filicinus. High humidity, mild temperatures, and poor air circulation are the primary drivers of an outbreak. Plants grown in enclosed, damp environments, such as greenhouses or terrariums without proper ventilation, are particularly susceptible to severe infestations.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Growers should focus on sanitation, specifically the removal and destruction of all infected fronds and plant debris. Improving air circulation around the plants and avoiding overhead irrigation can significantly reduce the risk. In extreme cases, preventative applications of fungicides are recommended to protect healthy foliage.
