Barley scald, caused by the fungus Rhynchosporium graminicola, is a devastating foliar disease affecting barley and rye crops worldwide. The disease is characterized by distinct leaf lesions that reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, often resulting in significant yield losses, particularly in regions with cool and moist environmental conditions.
The pathogen is highly host-specific, primarily infecting barley and rye. The fungus invades the leaf tissues, causing structural damage and disrupting physiological processes. Early detection is critical, as the disease can spread rapidly through a crop canopy, especially when environmental conditions are optimal for fungal sporulation and secondary infection cycles.
