The Rickenellaceae family belongs to the order Hymenochaetales. It is crucial to note that in agricultural phytopathology, these fungi are not classified as plant pathogens or diseases that impact commercial crops. They are primarily saprotrophic or bryophilous fungi that play an essential role in forest ecosystem decomposition processes.
The biology of these fungi is centered on their interaction with decaying organic matter and bryophytes (mosses). They prefer humid, shaded environments such as forest floors or rotting wood. Their presence in agricultural fields is extremely rare and typically indicates the proximity of natural woodland areas rather than an outbreak of a plant disease.
There are no symptoms or signs of infection for commercial crops, as Rickenellaceae do not possess the necessary enzymatic or biological mechanisms to parasitize living agricultural plants. Any association between these fungi and crops is purely incidental and occurs only on dead or severely compromised organic tissues.
Development and spread are facilitated by high humidity, cool temperatures, and the availability of specific substrates like decaying logs or moss-covered soil. In conventional farming, tillage and proper moisture management create an environment that is naturally hostile to these fungi, ensuring they remain outside the scope of agricultural threats.
No protective or chemical measures are required to combat this family. Management practices focus on standard agronomic hygiene, such as removing redundant crop residues and ensuring proper field drainage, which naturally prevent the colonization of soil surfaces by saprotrophic forest fungi.
