Rind stipple of grapefruit is a non-parasitic physiological disorder that affects the surface of the peel. Since it is not caused by fungi, bacteria, or viruses, it is strictly classified as an environmental or nutritional issue related to the internal development of the citrus fruit during the ripening process.
This disorder is specific to the Citrus genus, with grapefruit being highly susceptible due to the structural characteristics of its peel. While the damage is superficial and does not affect the interior quality or taste of the fruit, it significantly reduces the grade of the produce, often making it unsuitable for fresh market sales.
The visual symptoms appear as small, slightly sunken, irregularly shaped spots on the peel surface. These spots are typically brownish or reddish-brown. Unlike fungal infections, there is no mycelium or sporulation associated with these marks, though the damaged tissue can become brittle and prone to cracking over time.
Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of this disorder. Sudden fluctuations in atmospheric humidity and temperature are common triggers. Additionally, imbalances in soil nutrition, particularly low levels of calcium or excessive nitrogen supply, lead to uneven expansion of peel cells, resulting in the characteristic stippling effect.

Maintaining a consistent irrigation schedule prevents rapid changes in fruit turgor, while targeted fertilization programs ensure adequate calcium uptake. Growers should monitor tree vigor and avoid excessive vegetative growth to minimize the susceptibility of the fruit to this physiological stress.
